After 25 years of reading Fine Homebuilding
magazine as escape literature, Tim Slager
made a move from technical writing to construction. His prior construction experience combined with writing and editing skills helped him land a job with The McGraw-Hill Companies Construction Information Group, where he helped create an online version
of the Sweets Catalog Files
. From there he moved to Dematic Corp.
, where he documented how to operate materials-handling software and controls and how to repair equipment.
Growing up in Iowa, Tim dreamed of becoming a farmer. After high school he spent two years working for farmers in Montana and Washington, until he was ready for college. He worked his way through college as a welder, machinist, carpenter, and logger. After college he and his family spent 7 years in Liberia, West Africa. He worked as a literature and literacy developer, but also designed and oversaw the construction of a print shop on a shoe-string budget.
Tim's claim to fame is that he is the only white man to canoe upstream on Birch Creek the 250 miles from its mouth on the Yukon River to where it crosses the road near the town of Circle, Alaska.
Tim is also available for contract technical writing
